There are a number of laws prohibiting discrimination in housing-related transactions at the Federal, State, County, and Municipal levels. Local Fair Housing Centers will advocate for victims of housing discrimination through fair housing testing/investigations, assisting with filing a complaint, and providing access to legal representation. It is important that you contact your local fair housing center as soon as possible because you may have as little as 180 days to file a complaint.

Discrimination is rarely overt and often goes unnoticed. Some examples of discrimination in housing-related transactions:

• Providing false information or refusing to provide information about housing availability

• Applying different terms or conditions to the sale or rental of housing based on protected class status

• Providing different services based on protected class status

• Refusing to allow reasonable accommodations or modifications for a person with a disability

• Steering a housing seeker to a certain neighborhood or housing option based on protected class status
